Contests - Good, Bad or Ugly?

Now that the Preditor & Editor Poll has concluded, we can all take a deep breath and enjoy not being hounded every five minutes by someone asking you to "vote for my book."  Years ago, as a new author, I was excited when someone nominated my debut novel.  To see my first work listed among a myriad of other books made me feel accomplished...more so than just being published, until I found out that people were self-nominating.  You didn't have to rate any type of recognition for having written a profound novel or compelling read, and votes could be commanded, begged, and even stolen if you count that some people thought it was all right to vote under more than one email account.   If I recall correctly, I didn't finish very high in the rankings, but then as a new author, I didn't know many people so I couldn't compete in the popularity contest that P&E became.  I voted only in categories I felt qualified for my vote...author's page, publisher, editor, cover artist.  I didn't feel it was fair to vote for a book I hadn't even read.

The pattern has continued each year, and I've watched as the number of entrants dwindle.  There used to be four times the amount of authors entered and even more emails flying around, soliciting votes. I was one who sent them...even nominated myself one year.  I didn't win, but would I have been proud of being honored if I had?  The top ten winners in each category proudly displayed their badges on their websites, noting an honorable accomplihsment.  Was it?  Or had they just let the world know that they spent countless hours hawking votes and were awarded for having the most convincing plea or the largest amount of friends?  Is that what most contests have become...trailer awards, cover awards, best book review.  How often do you see emails where people are asking for your support?  Do you give it?

Even peer reviews have come under scrutiny.  The "liking" and "tagging" pleas for books on Amazon, along with reviews written by friends of the authors, have caused those who are purely readers to question how valid a review given by another author can be.  I've written a few reviews on Amazon for books I've read, but I admit to tagging and liking some I haven't.  Is that honest?

This year, being part of a new publisher with tons of fledgling authors, the loop was flooded with excitement and endless scrolls of "vote for me in the P&E poll," "no, vote for so and so," even, "I'll back out if you vote for this person so he can win."  I tried to express my opinion and ended up being flogged on the readers loop for dimming down what should be a joyous moment.  As I watched from the sidelines with a bitter taste in my mouth, I realized, winning or losing didn't really matter to most, it was about camaraderie, family, and support.  If you believe in your publisher, you must believe they contract only the best work, so why wouldn't you support your peers.  I didn't advertise that I voted, but I did.  I supported my publishing families...two of them, and although it was difficult in some categories where several author sisters and brothers competed, I actually read samples on Amazon before I voted for work I hadn't read.

I suppose whether or not you vote in any of the ongoing contests is a personal choice.  I've voted for friends who have asked me, and I've probably asked for a few votes here and there myself, but really, do I want my videos to be judged by the number of friends I have or by the work that went into the product?  Do I want to be deemed the most worthy of an award because I spent more time sending out emails?  I don't think so.  My trophy cabinet may remain bare, but I'll still have my foolish pride, won't I?  Winning a contest is sort of like winning the race...you have to break the ribbon first.  No steroids allowed, and the judges watch you like crazy.  I like the surprise nominations...ones you know nothing about and can do nothing to manipulate.  Those are the ones I want to win.  Dreaming, aren't I?

I'm interested to see how others feel.  Has being in the industry for a few years changed how you view contests or am I the only skeptic?

Lisabet Sarai's in the house!

Contests as Market Research

by Lisabet Sarai

I can't begin to represent myself as an expert on promotion. Like most authors, I struggle, trying to figure out how to best allocate my scarce time in order to increase name recognition and ultimately sales. One promotional trick I've tried which has ancillary benefits is running contests that also provide me with information about my readers.

Every month I publish a “newsletter” which includes information on latest releases, acceptances, reviews and so on. A regular feature is my contest of the month. The newsletter is actually a page on my website, so it is easily accessible throughout the month. I've experimented with various types of contests: trivia contests, scavenger hunts, review posting, prizes for joining my email list and so on. One thing I've discovered is that anything that requires much work will not generate a good response! My most successful contests (in terms of response) have involved asking readers to send me an email with their opinion about some question.

I've asked my readers to tell me what Yahoo groups and review websites they like the best or visit most often; whether they like M/M romance and why; whether they enjoy F/F romance and why; what kind of paranormal themes they like best; and so on. I gather entries throughout the month (I have a special email address just for contests), then I randomly select one participant to receive the prize (usually a free book).

I have no idea whether these contests improve my sales. However, they offer other benefits. For one thing, I get some feedback on what readers are looking for in the books they read. I've received some thoughtful and detailed replies to my questions. I won't necessarily tailor what I write to match readers' preferences (for one thing, they don't all agree!), but a commonly held opinion will definitely influence my choices to some extent. Another positive aspect of this contest format is that it gives me the opportunity to engage my readers in email conversations. (I try to reply personally to every entry.) Finally, the responses give me fodder for blog posts and other articles. For example, I wrote about M/M romance on the Total-E-Bound blog last April and quoted from some of my readers' comments (with their permission).

I'm running a contest this month asking readers to describe their pet peeves in reading romance. The prize is the winner's choice of my two most recent releases, Getaway Girl, M/F light bondage romance , or Monsoon Fever, a historical multicultural M/M/F menage romance. I'd love to see some reader of Ginger's blog become my winner! Details are available at http://www.lisabetsarai.com/news.html

Help give my heroine a nick name

The heroine in my WIP is a highly intelligent woman, who has a lot of self-doubts and is very klutzy. Her name is Leslie McAllister. I can change the last name, but not the first. Leslie is a character in my Christmas story release - A COWBOY'S DREAM. I asked a few days ago for some suggestions (on my blog). All of them were great. Thanks for taking the time to help.

I then asked a few friends of mine to read over the suggestions and pick their top three. I'm posting them here, so you can vote on them.

Dizzy Lizzy
Hurricane Leslie
Miss Accident Prone
Grace
Messy Lessy
Klutzy Lutzy

Please vote once and by midnight, Friday August 15th. The person who suggested the winning name will receive WILD WOMEN OF THE WEST an anthology with stories by Delilah Devlin, Layla Chase and Myla Jackson. This book is rated REALLY HOT.

And everyone who votes will be in a special drawing for TEXAS RAIN by Jodi Thomas.

Thanks!

My TWRP Titles by Pamela S Thibodeaux

Wow, so many great posts, blurbs and excerpts! I really love the interviews with characters...that is so neat! Maybe when I get my "to do" list shortened a bit, I'll interview my characters.

Just in case you're wondering what the TWRP stands for in my title for this blog, it is The Wild Rose Press. Though fairly new in the publishing industry TWRP is making a splash, releasing titles in Ebook and print in every romantic sub-genre imaginable. Writers, check out their submission guidelines here. Readers, find out about their lines and what's happening here!
This year TWRP is spotlighting their individual lines in a monthly promo extravaganza with games and prizes. This month is the White Rose (Inspirational) line and TWRP is having a Jelly Bean Hunt!

I have 3 titles available through the White Rose line.
My debut single-title novel, The Inheritance was released last year and is available in Ebook and Print.

The Inheritance is about the chance we all long for…the chance to start over. Widowed at age thirty-nine and suffering from empty nest syndrome, Rebecca Sinclair is overshadowed by grief and loneliness. Her husband has been deceased for a year, her oldest child has moved to New York in pursuit of an acting career and her youngest child is attending college in France. Having spent over half of her life as a wife and mother, she has no idea what God has in store for her now. Will an unexpected inheritance in the wine country of New York bring meaning and purpose to her life and give her the courage to love again?

US Postal worker Raymond Jacobey has been in love with the little widow since he first set eyes on her. A wanderer searching for the ever-illusive soul mate, Ray has never stayed in one place too long. Raised by self-centered, high-power executives, he’s longed for the idyllic life of residing in a cozy house in a small town with the love of his life. Will he gain the heart of the lovely widow or will he lose her to the wine country of New York?

As well as novels, TWRP offers short ebooks for your reading pleasure!
My short story Cathy's Angel received a "Recommended Read" from MyBook Cravings!
Single mom Cathy Johnson is tired of running her life alone…what she needs is a well-trained angel to help out. Jared Savoy gave up the dream of having a family when he discovered he is sterile. Can a confirmed bachelor and the mother of four find love amid normal daily chaos?
Choices won Reviewer's Top Pick from Night Owl Romance!
Best-selling novelist and songwriter, Camie Rogers has penned numerous accounts of the secret love she holds in her heart. Country-Music Superstar Kip Allen has changed from the shy, humble boy, to the epitome of “star.” Can the two rediscover each other after one night of his Home is where the Heart is Tour?
A Hero for Jessica is coming March 26th!
Anthony Paul Seville is known as the ‘most eligible bachelor’ in New Orleans, possibly even the entire state of Louisiana, but finds himself alone—completely and explicitly alone. Jessica Aucoin is a writer on her way to fame and fortune, but is haunted by a man from her past. Will the “champion” lawyer and the author of romantic suspense find love written in their cards?
Well folks, I hope you've enjoyed this sneak peek at my TWRP titles. Don't forget to run over there and participate in the Jelly Bean Hunt!
Until later take care, be BLESSED! and remember......There are Angels among us and if you make the right Choices in your life, God will set YOU apart for an Inheritance and very possibly bless you with a Hero of your own.
"Inspirational with and Edge!"

PS: Attn. Readers! Leave a comment and one lucky person will WIN a pdf of one of my TWRP titles!

Promo Ain't Easy

Ever wonder why most blogs and websites are a never-ending display of pleas for votes or invitations to engage in contests? Simple. Most authors are involved in self-promotion to sell books, and nothing is more effective than speaking up about oneself. If we don't, no one else will. Many of us are with small press who don't have the budget the compete with the 'big dogs' of the publishing industry. The burden of promotion falls to the author, and if you remain silent, you remain invisible.

Trust me, it isn't always easy, especially for those of us who aren't very good at selling ourselves. I feel like the graphic...like I'm always talking to people's backs and my words fall short, but If I don't tell you about my books or contests, or prizes that I'm vying for, how will you ever find out? That's why I blog.

I try to keep my posts interesting and appealing enough to reel folks back, but writing every day and coming up with the right pizazz is a chore. I like humor, so I try to infuse a little every now and then. So far, I think I've managed to retain a few of you. :)

While I realize that you might care less if I'm in a contest for a video trailer, or nominated for special recognition for one of my works, it ultimately falls on you to decide if I win or not. I've never been good at begging, so all I can tell you is that no matter whether you vote for me or one of my peers in a contest or poll, you are recognizing someone's effort and showing your appreciation. Warm Fuzzies are something that we all need from time to time.

And speaking of warm fuzzies: Here's Prissy...
Now that I've got that out of the way. Please head over to The New Covey Awards and vote for your favorite cover and trailer. I have to admit that there are two there that a favorites of mine. *lol* LIke I said, no matter for whom you cast your vote, you'll make someone smile. Pay it forward.

COVER AND TRAILER AWARDS - VOTE NOW

Hey everyone. There's a great place on blogspot.com where you can vote for your favorite book covers and video trailers. I'm not naive enough to think I can win, but I entered Sparta Rose in both. The cover is delicious and the trailer isn't bad, although I did that one myself. It hardly stands up to the other professionally and more perfectly done videos there. Please vote your choice. I'm there for the free promotion. *lol*

The New Covey Awards

NOTE:
Voting for the trailers won't commence until they've received 30 entrants or November 30th, whichever comes first.
