How we create our characters and make them believable and compelling:

 

While pondering the creation of a novel or a short story, 

I have a sense of time and place.  

I'll hear snippets of dialogue, or a song/music.

This allows me to enter the story.

Little by little, the characters reveal themselves to me.

I begin listening to his/her preference in music, food, likes and dislikes, etc.

The cadence of his/her voice comes into play when the audiobook is produced.

Like most writers, I live in the character's world.

My nomadic childhood is a plus in this instance.  Writing a story about a cowboy

(since I'd lived in Texas) required less research than a main character from 

Maine.

In a romance novel, there are always internal emotions: the law of attraction.

Clues?

Mirroring a person's movements, gestures, and posture.

Stealing furtive glances.

Whereas in a mystery or crime novel, strain or tension will be the emotion

 pushed to the forefront.

Rigid muscles, pacing, speaking in a rushed tone, leaning forward with a stiff neck.

And there is fear:

A visible pulse, keeping one's back to the wall or corner, talking to oneself.

Long-term fear:

Panic attacks and phobias, depression, withdrawing from others.

Suppressed fear:

Keeping silent, attempting to keep one's voice light.

 Holding up the bottle, Persia allowed the light to shine through the tempered vial

 for a moment before she made certain the stopper was tight.

This was a signature fragrance.

Her signature fragrance. 

A scent so sensational it would outsell Nina Rocci's L'Air du Temps, or perhaps

 surpass the world's timeless fragrance, Chanel No.5

This was her--

"I've done warned you and warned you about messing with love potions!" Simone

 l

eaned over Persia's shoulder to hiss the words in her ear. 

The statement yanked Persia out of her state of bliss and sent her heart

 thundering.

Persia snagged a steadying breath to regain her composure. "You worry too

 much, Simone." 

 Setting down her atomizer, she rearranged her test tubes,

"This is a perfume. Nothing more, nothing less."

 

Simone's brightly turbanned head caught the Louisiana sun streaming through

 the perfumery's large display window.  

Resting her hands on her ample hips, in a voice that demanded Pesia's full

 attention, she said, "That be no French perfume you be selling."
