“My writing I do for me! “

When I was at the MT RWA Writer’s conference I was asked, “What made you want to be a writer?”   That was an easy question for me to answer.  When I was very young my alcoholic parents used to fight a lot. I would crawl into bed with my four siblings and then dream a story in my head – so the fighting would go away.  That was my earliest experiences of creating stories.  Books are movies in our heads that we bring to life on paper/computer as we type.
My stories took me away from all the bad things going on around me . . . and they continued to talk to me as I grew up.  My first works were children’s stories and after my first two, I found out the market at the time was totally saturated.  They were buying books for ten years ahead!  Yikes.  So I penned my first teen book and quickly realized– that just wasn’t the genre’ for me!
A dear friend of mine, international best-selling author, Kat Martin, said, “Write what you love to read.”  That happened to be the best advice I’d received as an aspiring writer.  One I share as often as I can – in hopes it will help others.  I loved, and still love to read Indian historicals.  My first book published was Indian historical, Whispering Sun.  I wrote that book because Kat inspired me to write it!  How blessed did I get? - -By the way - - if you haven’t read Kat Martin … you MUST!  Check her out online! http://www.katbooks.com/
Another question I was asked several times at the conference, “Have you ever thought of quitting – and not write another book?”  Oh, boy, that is a loaded question.  I had to answer, “Yes.”  But then my husband set me straight. He asked me, “Will you be happy if you stop writing?”  I knew the answer without thinking – Of course not. Writing is a part of me…it’s who I am.
Writing is something that drives you.  It robs you of your own free will - - because you can’t stop the stories from coming.  It’s inevitable – for me anyway – that while I’m writing a book – my next book will start forming and try to steal the keyboard.  I have to jot down ideas and sentences just to make it leave me alone!
I work a full-time job… and the demands of a family, husband, and all that goes with it … so I must fit my writing into my evenings and weekends… I set my goals and work as hard as I can to honor my schedule.  When getting tired and frustrated – like anyone else … I ask myself, “Why am I doing this?  Why am I working so hard to write? I could be relaxing watching TV or making jewelry… or ….etc.”  I would call my sister, Diane, and she would ask me this most important question.  “Who do you write for?”
You see . . . I do everything for my family … my husband… my work . . . but guess what … my writing I do for me!  It’s the one thing that is all about me.  It’s my passion . . . it’s my drive . . . it’s my space. No one can change it or do it for me.  No one can stop me from writing . . . except me.
I won’t quit – because I can’t quit.  The stories keep haunting me to write them.  It’s like my Tango Of Death  story – it haunted me for ten years to write it . . . and it exploded into a trilogy; Gypsy Spirit, Partisan Heart and Jewish Soul.
I love to read and I love to write! I would suspect I’ll be doing both until the day I die.

The Montana RWA writer’s conference was FABULOUS!  INCREDIBLE!  OUTSTANDING!  FUN!  A BLAST!  You know me… I always have fun.  Friday night I had a lovely dinner out with Kat & Larry Martin.  If you’ve never read either Kat or Larry – you are missing something special.  Check them out …. http://www.katbooks.com/
I should have put my jacket back on for this picture!
My presentation went great.  At first I thought…dang they are all staring at me … and either they are truly interested in what I’m saying and are engaged … or they are the after lunch crowd and fighting falling asleep!!  Giggle
After my talk… they went around the room to introduce ourselves …share what we write…etc.  Almost every one of them made a comment how my talk affected them!  That was the most rewarding feeling ever.
After the conference we had a book signing.  We were lined up… six of us.  A lady who was a patron at the Hot Springs asked, “Who was the author that was salsa dancing all night?”  The authors all looked over at me and I slightly raised my hand and said, Uh, that would be me.” Then she asked, “Well who was the author going down the water slide…screaming like a Banshee, and nearly drowned.  When she came to the surface everyone in the pool yelled and clapped?”  The authors all looked over at me and I slightly raised my hand and said, Uh, that would be me, too.”  The woman said, “Well, you sound like a lot of fun, I’m going to buy your book!!  And she bought each of them!  Giggle.
A young man wanted to meet the 22 year old aspiring author (Sarah) that I brought with me.  Nice young lady…gorgeous and has it ‘going on’.  So he yells… after overhearing me say, “I nearly drowned.”  “I wasn’t giving you mouth-to-mouth!”  I said, “Be careful, I’ll kill you off in one of my books.”  He said, “Oh, I saw there were a bunch of writers here.”  We chatted, then he said, “I’ll buff up like Fabio so you can put me on the cover.”  I said, “Oh, don’t do that.  You’re better looking than he ever thought of being.”  So he yells, “I would give her mouth-to-mouth after all!”  We all laughed.  I caught on soon… he was interested in Sarah…using me to do it.  That’s okay.  Nice guy. Gooooood looking…. from a local town and works 16 hours a day.  Hmmmm…good looking …not lazy!  Uh huh!!
So he asked Sarah if he could buy her a drink and she said yes.  So we went to our room… changed and met him at the bar. He loved to dance… they were so cute gitter-bugging… he asked me to dance a big-band song … loved it!  WE all danced until 1:00am… we got two ‘sister’ having their ‘sisters week together’ out on the dance floor.  Later found out they were readers…came to the signing and bought both my books!  I kept referring to them as the ‘older ladies’ until I found out they were younger than me!!  SO not funny!!
The MT RWA group put together such a great conference and they’re doing it again next year!  They had a banquet Saturday night… what fun.  Awarded fun prizes like halos, wands… and for a few of us… a pink feather boa…well… I put it around me and seductively started singing …”When he walked in the room… I could see he were a man of distinction, a real big spender, hey, big spender!  Spend a little time with me!”  And when I got to the “Hey big spender,” BJ put her back to me and joined in.   Everyone was clapping and laughing!  What a hoot.  I told the group at my table… “If they call me up there one more time to make a fool of myself…I’m not going.”  Sure enough… they had a ‘presenter’s gift’… and called my name.  Everyone at the table offered to go up and take it for me!!
Needless to say…what a blast!!  Fun … and inspirational.  BJ Daniels was fabulous.  http://www.bjdaniels.com/  She writes and talks by the seat of her pants.  Doesn’t have anything written down … she just goes with the flow.  Funny… hilarious woman!  Another gal spoke on the process of writing…. She is an editor and knows what she’s talking about.
I made a donation basket with Atonement, Atonement mouse, hand-made dream catcher, necklace and bracelet, key chain, tote bag and candle wax cubes.  There were four baskets… and it earned over $150 for a fund to help writers come to conferences like this …and wouldn’t have the opportunity otherwise because of finances.  Really nice.
Hmmmm did I miss anything??  Did I mention I had a great time . . . There you have it…. A native man came up and started chatting with me… I told him I was part Chippewa Cree… we talked and he brought his wife up.  We talked and then she told me she was Chippewa Cree also.  She bought both my books – I jotted in the book … ‘we share the Chippewa Cree spirit’…and saw her smiling and sharing it with her hubby - then later they came back and asked if she could have a picture taken with me!!  Awwww that was so sweet!  This was the hi-light of my conference.  I hope she enjoys reading my books.  J

RITA ASKS, WHAT ARE YOU READING?

Well I just finished reading Against the Wind by Kat Martin. I’m hoping to have Kat as a ‘guest’ in the near future. If you haven’t read her - she’s a must!! (I make an effort to buy every one of her books – I highly recommend Kat’s books.)

Kat is a personal friend of mine – a friendship I value. She gave me the best advice when I started writing, ‘write what you love to read.’ She is one of those people that you automatically like – her warmth and bright smile express more than words.
What did I think of Against the Wind? I loved it, of course! I believed Sarah and she sucked me in from the beginning. Of course I’d have taken a second…third…and fourth glance at Jackson. My kind of man! What makes Against the Wind extra special is Sarah’s daughter, Holly. Love this book . . . and you will, too.

Against the Wind (2011) The first book in the Raines of Wind Canyon series
They were known as the "no-account Raines boys" but they've grown into successful, honorable men and everything they have, they've fought for tooth and nail. Now each of the three brothers has one last obstacle to overcome to claim what's eluding them: love.
Secrets don't stay buried long in cattle country. Sarah Allen, the beautiful girl who humiliated Jackson Raines in high school, is back in town. Not so long ago, she couldn't wait to leave Wind Canyon, Wyoming, in her dust. But, recently widowed, she has nowhere else to go and finds herself on Jackson's ranch. And despite everything, Jackson's finding himself reluctant to get rid of her.
Sarah brings her own kind of trouble, and he can't resist trouble. Enemies of her dead husband show up making threats, thinking she has something they're owed. They're not taking no for an answer, but what they will take is the one thing she has left - her daughter. Jackson's the only one who might be able to save little Holly and bring her home.

I’m looking forward to reading Against the Fire of the Raines of Wind Canyon series. It’s sitting on my desk…ready to start reading!!
Once one of the “no-account Raines boys,” Gabriel Raines has pulled himself out of poverty by his bootstraps to become a successful businessman—one who has become the target of revenge…
You can’t fight what you can’t see. And Gabriel Raines can’t be sure just who’s setting the fires in his new real-estate development. When two fires hit back-to-back, he knows it’s personal, but any number of competitors or ex-employees could be the arsonist.
The police suspect Angel Ramirez, a local teen who’s been in trouble before. But Mattie Baker, a volunteer at the Family Abuse center, just can’t believe the kid she’s been working with would go back to his delinquent ways.
Determined to convince Gabe that she’s right, Mattie must get close to him and find out who’s putting their neighborhood in jeopardy. And just as the arsonist’s flames continue to burn, they find a heat developing between them. It might just turn into a full-fledged fire…if they can survive long enough.
You have to admit – this sounds great! I can’t wait to start reading!

Rita’s Lucky 7 MeMe

Wouldn’t you know it . . . Ginger emailed me with her ‘buttering-up’ way of making me feel great by telling me I’m one of her top seven favorite historical authors. What can I say to that… other than ‘sure’ I’d be happy to play the ‘Lucy 7 MeMe’…. So below is list of my favorite historical authors ~ know Ginger would have been on my list . . . but she was already tagged …the sneaker bugger!
Rita’s Lucky 7 MeMe
“I can’t see the need to have some lady come and teach me these things. I talk just fine. You and everyone else can understand my meanin’ so where’s the problem? I ain’t fond of schoolin’ and I sure knows how to eat. This whole thing is a waste of time.”
“I don’t care to debate it further, Laura,” his tone was stern and unmoving.
“Tarnation! You’re a mighty stubborn and curious man, Gerhard Rolston.”
“How many times do I have to tell you, from now on you are to call me father?”
“I’ve said my piece about the subject and it ain’t awful hard to understand. I’ve called Daniel Hewett my father for sixteen years. I loved him very much. I ain’t suddenly gonna start calling you father. You’ll have to give me a spell ta get use to things.”
Now I have to name seven of my favorite historical authors. Hmmm, this will be hard because I have so many and Ginger stole a couple of them . . . as did some of my other writer friends. So I have to confess ~ I have a list of five to share with you. They are fabulous writers and if you haven’t checked them out ~ please do so, you won’t be disappointed.
     1. Lynn Connolly
     2. Maddie James
     3. Kat Martin
     4. Juliet Waldron
     5. Beth Williamson
As Ginger commented ~ now comes the hard part . . . or maybe it’s not so hard. Writers are proud and happy to share their work. Requests like these are time-consuming, yet an honor.
