WHERE DO THOSE IDEAS COME FROM?
Thanks so much for having me today on Dishin’ It Out. I’m excited to have your readers learn about my latest release, The Art of Love and Murder, the first book in my Love and Murder series. I hope everyone enters the Rafflecopter drawing for a tote bag of items that relate to the book. The more you enter, the more chances you have to win. This link will direct you to all the blogs on my tour: http://brendawhiteside.blogspot.com/p/contests-and-give-ways.html
Stories come to me from a phrase, a song, people I know or any other number of ways. This isn’t unique to me. Writers find inspiration in many different ways, at times not even recognizing where or how the idea came to them.
My Love and Murder series started a bit differently this time. There was no zing of inspiration from something I overheard, a phrase I read or a song on the radio. I purposely set out to write a series – and I wanted suspense and murder to be part of it. My husband is an avid reader of suspense. One night at dinner, I announced my intentions and asked for some brainstorming help. He’s a big supporter, but I’ve never asked for input. Once I described my heroine and steered him away from his first suggestions involving the CIA, we rolled along. He’s been instrumental in helping me brainstorm the first three books – The Art of Love and Murder, Southwest of Love and Murder and The Legacy of Love and Murder.
Books four and five are still vague ideas, but I know who I can count on to help me brainstorm.
Blurb for The Art of Love and Murder:
Lacy Dahl never questioned her past until the deaths of her adoptive parents and her husband. A husband who wasn't what he seemed. Her research uncovers secrets about the mother she never knew; secrets that dispute the identity of her father and threaten her life.
Sheriff Chance Meadowlark is still haunted by the murder of his wife and the revenge he unleashed in the name of justice. When he meets Lacy he is determined not to become involved, but their pasts may make that impossible. As they move closer to the truth, saving Lacy may be his only salvation.
Lacy begins to think the present is more important than her past...until Chance's connection to her mother and a murder spin her deeper into danger and further from love. Will the truth destroy Lacy and Chance or will it be the answer that frees them?
Excerpt for The Art of Love and Murder:
Lacy quickened her pace. The footsteps behind her did the same. As fast as her feet touched the bricks, her heart beat twice that speed. If only she could clear the narrow alley, step onto the lit sidewalk… Like a magnet, the street light pulled her forward, and she lunged out of the darkness. Her hand slammed to her chest. After a hard intake of breath and a fast exhale, she cast a furtive glance over her shoulder. With the strap of her purse in a tight fist against her breast, she whirled around to cover the last block at a trot.
She didn’t see him until too late.
As if she’d hit a cement wall, she careened off balance, but his hands grabbed her shoulders keeping her upright. She gasped and reared back and out of his arms. Her fisted purse became a weapon as she hurled a defensive blow to his chest. Her knee came up, landing a jab to his thigh. “Ehhh,” she cried out from the pain of contact.
“Lady, I’m not going to hurt you.” He held his ground and loomed over her, his hands at his chest fending off the swing of her fist.
Her vision filled with the imposing figure, and a chill shivered her body. Run screamed in her head. This time the swing of her purse missed her target when she turned to escape. His hand caught her arm and pulled her close.
“Help, help me!” Her voice came high and hysterical.
“I am trying to help.”
Both hands gripped her shoulders now, and her feet came partly off the ground, forcing her to look into his face.
“What’s wrong? Are you in trouble?”
Her head swung side to side, but the empty street and sidewalks could have been a ghost town. In the distance, a jazzy tune drifted through the air with voices too far away to help. She gulped.
He waited.

About the Author:
Brenda spends most of her time writing stories of discovery and love. The rest of her time is spent tending vegetables on the small family farm she shares with her husband, son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Together, they’ve embraced an age-old lifestyle that has been mostly lost in the United States - multiple generations living under one roof, who share the workload, follow their individual dreams and reap the benefits of combined talents.
Although she didn’t start out to write romance, she’s found all good stories involve complicated human relationships. She’s also found no matter a person’s age, a new discovery is right around every corner. Whether humorous or serious, straight contemporary or mystery, all her books revolve around those two facts.

First off I would like to thank Ginger for asking me to be here. She is such a wonderful lady and so talented…thanks Ginger!
I’m blessed and thankful for the loving family that supports me in everything I do. My husband is especially supportive and I love him for that. My writing career has taken away precious ‘us’ time but he understands and for that I am grateful.
The holidays are my favorite time of year. Halloween starts it and Christmas ends it. We usually have a large gathering for Thanksgiving though over the years it does vary with how many people can make it. But all is welcome and they know they don’t need an invitation to sit at my table.
I don’t usually write during the holiday season because I am so busy baking, crocheting gifts and shopping, let alone my full time day job, whew, but this year I’m cracking down. I need to finish The Guardian, Book 3 The Empowered Spirits Series. Since I’ve been sick I haven’t written a lick so I have a lot of catching up to do. If you get a chance to check out the first two books in the series, Dragon Lord of Kells and Ancestors of Fire you won’t be disappointed. They are set in 1092 and 1093 Ireland, respectively. They are all fantasy romances with shape shifters, dragons and fairies amongst other creatures of lore. A book makes a great gift. You can find me at www.thewildrosepress.com with my series or you can find all my books at www.amazon.com, you can check out my book videos at my website at http://brenda-weaver.tripod.com leave me a message I love feedback.
I have an historical romance that will take you back to 1774 from England to the colonies. A must read that will capture you from the very beginning. Hell’s Raging Fury is one not to miss.
I hope all your days are as blessed as mine. Happy Holidays!

Welcome, Rachel Brimble
But I can’t write that…can I?
When I started writing, I dreamed of having a romantic suspense novel published. That dream became a reality upon my first acceptance from The Wild Rose Press in 2007.
Searching For Sophie was my baby, my first attempt at a novel which I re-wrote and revised at least half a dozen times and my editor (God bless her!) worked on to make it the best it could be. The book was released in July the following year and I was ecstatic. After that? Another romantic suspense for The Wild Rose Press. Reluctant Witness was released in 2009.
And then something strange happened. Something which threw a curve ball into my nice comfy writing future, something that surprised me as much as it scared me…
That something was actually a someone, Hannah…Hannah Boyd.
This was the first character (and only one since!) who came to me fully formed and talking with a voice I could clearly hear whenever she chose to speak to me. I could hear her accent, her laugh, her derision, her mindset, everything. I wrote her story in three months which was the quickest ever for me and trust me, the quickest since since.
A romantic comedy, The Sharp Points of a Triangle is set at a financial advisers’ seminar in rural England . Not the most natural setting for a romantic comedy you might say but Hannah told me her job from the first day she came unbidden into my mind, and then I just wrote what she told me. The book was accepted by Eternal Press and released in January this year to great review, thank goodness.
So that was it – I thought I know my calling, I was a writer of contemporary fiction whether it be suspense or comedy, onwards and upwards - then came a visit with my mother to an historic stately home near where I live in South West England…
We had been treated to afternoon tea at the beautiful estate of Lucknam Park in Colerne near Bath (www.lucknampark.co.uk) and the moment I walked inside I knew this would become the home to one of my hero’s. And then somewhere in between eating a teeny-weeny salmon sandwich and an even tinier chocolate éclair, it came to me…my very first historical! Ta da!
But no, I wasn’t happy about this revelation, I was terrified!
I couldn’t write an historical…could I??
I went home, ran to my laptop and immediately found myself opening the preliminary plans I’d been drawing up over the previous two weeks about a heroine who I could not figure out. I didn’t get her story. Something wasn’t clicking. Her voice didn’t fit – and then I realized who she was.
She was Lily, daughter to a wealthy Victorian gentleman on the run from an arranged marriage. She was the heroine for my hero of Lucknam Park , Cotswold Manor as it became.
I started writing, I LOVED researching and before I knew it, I was actually doing it, I was writing my very first historical. Sick with nerves and self-doubt, I asked myself again and again who I thought I was that I could attempt an historical when all I’d written before was contemporary. But then I let myself off the hook, stopped beating myself up – yes, I wasn’t an historian, yes, I didn’t know or claim to know everything about the Victorian era but love was love in 1895 as it is in 2010 and that, I could write about.
So ‘The Arrival of Lily Curtis’ is a romance set against a Victorian background – and I am eternally grateful to The Wild Rose Press for the huge surge of confidence they gave me when they offered me a contract straight away. Here’s a short excerpt. I’d love to know what you think!
The clock ticked like a heartbeat behind him, the fire crackled and spat. Andrew unconsciously held his breath waiting to see what this unpredictable woman would do next. One minute she seemed so full of grace and intellect, the next full of fire and resentment. The two distinctions in her personality shouldn’t have fit but they did— inexplicitly so.
“Well, what do you say?” he pressed.
She dropped her gaze and curtsied, throwing him off-guard once again. He felt his jaw tighten as he looked at her bowed head.
“I thank you, sir,” she said. “But I know my place and to sit with you and your guests would be most unacceptable.”
He stared at her. “Unacceptable?”
“Yes, sir.”
Andrew watched her for a moment longer before slowly crossing his arms. “You have a very genteel way about you,” he said. “One would almost suspect you have been educated.”
She snapped her head up, another flash of color darkening her cheeks. “Not at all, sir. I…I try to
better myself and the way I speak, that is all.”
He smiled. “Really?”
“Yes, sir.” She paused, a sudden glint in her eyes. “Of course, if it is not to your liking, I can
always revert to common speech and bad manners. It comes easily to me either way.”
Andrew felt the burst of laughter bubbling beneath his diaphragm and could do nothing to stop it erupting. It burst from his mouth and reverberated around the room. Uneasy laughter
rippled around the table, joining him in his amusement. He ignored them, not caring about
anything else but this enigma in front of him. His friends clearly laughed because of who he was rather than their shared delight, Lily on the other hand didn’t seem to care who he was and would say just what she pleased.
“You are quite agreeable just the way you are.” He grinned. “If you wish to continue with your
duties, then I will not stop you.”
He walked back to his chair and sat down. “Nicholas, another bottle of wine if you please. I have the distinct feeling a long night is ahead.”
“Of course, sir.”
Andrew tried and failed to wipe the smile from his face as Lily threw him a look of satisfaction
before obediently following Nicholas from the room. He picked up his glass and took a long mouthful.
Lily Curtis may be just what Cotswold Manor needed right now.

Welcome, Nora LeDuc
Do we call it ‘Word of Mouth’ or ‘Word of Computer’?
Recently we bought a bigger camper. What to do with our current one?
“No problem,” my husband told me. “We’ll list it for sale on Craigslist.”
I’m sure many of people have had good experiences with this list, but I immediately got a chill and heard a hoarse whisper, “Craigssslissst.”
Without hesitation, my husband wrote his ad and uploaded the pictures of the RV with his special C.L. security code.
See they have security precautions. Not to worry. I told myself.
The first prospective buyer’s email showed up almost immediately. He wanted to exchange a Harley Davidson bike for the camper. Now, we’re talking about a four year old hybrid vehicle worth around seven thousand, hardly a match for this type of bike.
“We’re not really good at bartering, or riding Harleys,” my husband said as he read it to me.
I agreed. We were more the pedal type of bikers. So we waited for another buyer to turn up
We didn’t wait long. The next hopeful candidate offered to pay a thousand dollars more than the camper was worth. Wow, was this a philanthropist? Wait, before we counted our profits, there was one minor glitch. The buyer couldn’t afford to pay all at once. He’d give us a thousand dollars a month until they reached the golden number of 8,000. Hmm, camping season would be long over by the time the buyers paid us off. And, the email continued, we weren’t to worry about his state of bankruptcy; his lawyer would send us a letter vouching for his ability to pay.
This was strange. If you’re in debt should you be buying a recreational vehicle? It’s not like we were selling a huge, live in type. Before we had a chance for a third offer or to reconsider our two offers, my husband walked outside, chatted with our next door neighborhood and sold our RV.
“Sorry,” he wrote our applicants, “the camper is gone.”
So is it true that the old fashion type of communication is dead? What I think it really means is despite all the headlines and discussions, you can’t beat the old face to face conversations that we’ve had since Eve told Adam, “Try this apple. You’ll like it.”
Nora LeDuc’s latest book Pick Up Lines For Murder from The Wild Rose Press and available on Amazon and BarnesandNoble.com
Sirenbooks Review (Nikki reviewer) This book was written with witty humor and spine tingling suspense.
The Romance Studio (Theresa Joseph reviewer) The characters were so endearingly realistic.

Welcome, Margaret Tanner

Margaret Tanner’s historical romance novels have been inspired by the hardships and triumphs of her pioneering ancestors in frontier Australia.
Wild Oats was released by The Wild Rose Press on 26th February. It is the prequel to The Trouble With Playboys which came 3rd in the recent Preditors & Editors Poll.
SHORT INTRODUCTION:
Captain Phillip Ashfield toasted his elevation to fatherhood, as a barrage of artillery pounded the battle scarred fields around him.
English aristocrat, Phillip Ashfield, comes to Australia to sow some “Wild Oats”. After seducing Allison Waverley, he decides to marry an heiress to consolidate the family fortunes. Phillip has made a fatal choice, that will not only ruin his own life, but the repercussions will be felt by the next generation.
To save Allison from the disgrace of having Phillip’s baby out of wedlock, Tommy Calvert, who has always loved Allison, marries her. Mortally wounded on the French battlefields, Tommy is found by Phillip who learns that Allison has borne him a son. He vows to claim the boy when the war is over, because his wife cannot give him an heir.
MY LOVE SCENE: THE YEAR is 1914 just prior to Tommy’s embarkation for the war in Europe.
The lights dimmed when the Tango was introduced. Every man in the room held his partner close. This dance had made the Palais notorious. “Evil,” “depraved,” and “immoral” were just a few of the descriptive words printed by the newspapers, but Allison liked it. Neither she nor Tommy could dance, but they soon copied the antics of others, and laughed and clapped as much as anyone.
The tempo of the place quietened when the saxophones in the band started up to accompany the man who sang, “If you were the only girl in the world, and I was the only boy...” They stood close together, listening, until it finished.
“Let’s leave now,” Tommy said, and Allison waited near the door as he went to collect her coat. He helped her into it, took her hand and they left.
Instead of making for the train station, Tommy led her towards the beach. It was a cool night, with dark clouds scudding across the sky, but numerous stars twinkled. The breeze blowing straight in off the sea smelt moist and salty, and the sand felt soft beneath her feet.
They didn’t speak, just walked slowly away from the lighted Palais. Except for the muted sound of the waves, it was silent on the beach, and Allison felt as if they were the last two people left in the world.
Tommy stopped and drew her close. “I love you, Allison.” He started whistling the tune. “If you were the only girl in the world, and I was the only boy,” softly in her ear and she leaned her head against his chest.
A magic spell cast itself over them. She didn’t want to speak, lest the spell be broken. Some instinct from deep within warned her this moment, once it disappeared, would never come again. She closed her eyes to shut out everything except Tommy’s nearness.

Native Americans and romantic fiction

Native Americans, anyone?
Ginger recently confessed she loved researching Native Americans. So, I thought I'd drop a few incredible resources I used for my latest release (print so far, e-book on April 3rd), FORBIDDEN ETERNITY. I've written a shamanic shape-shifting hero who has more than one chip on his shoulder. You would too if the guys you were trapped with in the Army called you Cochise, but you weren't Apache. No. Cochise (named by his peers with what he considers a name representing a phase of his life in which he made very bad choices) is Lakota.
Let's just say he can DISH IT OUT! And he can take it. ;)
Here's my model for Cochise, Mr. Drop-Dead Gorgeous Jay Tavare...

Sorry. I, uh, forgot what I was talking about...
(Stop looking at pictures, Skhye!)
Oh, wait. I remember!
So, what's the difference between Apaches and the Lakota? You're thinking they both lived on the Great Plains, rode war ponies, counted coup, and looked down-right gorgeous and tough in loincloths... Okay, you haven't read Thomas E. Mails' DOG SOLDIER SOCIETIES OF THE PLAINS. If you want to get the arrows right by culture or understand a culture's rituals, get this book! Each Plains people's warrior societies are described in great detail. And if you're searching for a way to allow your female characters (captives or not) to wield weapons and participate in battle, this reference book will tell you who can get away with what. DOG SOLDIER SOCIETIES OF THE PLAINS is a college-level text. But it won't put you to sleep. Okay, maybe I should say it didn't lull me to sleep. ;) I've always been enthralled by Native Americans. And I've got over 80 hours of anthropology under my belt. So, the geek in me knows I'm an outlying exception to the rule on the vast continuum of delightful to boring.
Another wonderful resource for all those writing contemporaries with Native-American characters is Hyemeyohsts Storm's SEVEN ARROWS. The easiest way to explain this book is to compare it to a self-help version of something akin to the Bible. First of all, you get the low-down on the four directions, medicine arrows, medicine wheels, etc. Then Storm begins the journey of the self. Each aspect of his belief system is taught by a story he tells. Chapter by chapter, you experience the sharing of his knowledge. And it's quite moving. The Bible put me to sleep. ;)
And yet another thought-provoking read is Frederick Drimmer's CAPTURED BY INDIANS: 15 FIRSTHAND ACCOUNTS, 1750-1870. I'm a big cheerleader for underdogs. I confess! This leaves me with strange interests... But CAPTURED BY INDIANS is by no means a handful of weird tales. Rather, it a collection of 15 true stories about white captives. So, you want to know what captives thought of Native Americans? Well, they often preferred living with them. ;) Curious?
Jack Weatherford's NATIVE ROOTS: HOW THE INDIANS ENRICHED AMERICA is an essential eye-opening read for those working on historicals with Native-American characters. It's amazing how much fear and hatred was recorded in history--another expression of the bias one cannot shake in recording history.
Erdoes & Ortiz's AMERICAN INDIAN MYTHS AND LEGENDS has been around for a while. But I always flip through it when wanting to round out a character with a bit of ideology. What can this book do for you? The myths and legends are broken down by culture. Yes. You just skim the table of contents and find the tales you'll need to read. Extra information about the cultures is located at the end of the book. I've used this book so many times that I recommend anyone writing a Native-American character own a copy. Ideology really rounds out a perspective.
So what does Skhye do with this type of reference material? In FORBIDDEN ETERNITY, Cochise is a modern who man raised on a reservation, exposed to many Native-American cultures, and gained an appreciation for different peoples. By the time FORBIDDEN ETERNITY takes place, he is quite worldly. But what makes him real to me are all of the myths and legends I've studied and the touching manner Storm shares his beliefs in SEVEN ARROWS. I've acquired a wealth of knowledge through the years and hope Cochise shares a bit of that information with readers. But his story is a dark paranormal...
FORBIDDEN ETERNITY
Sometimes the forbidden proves the only cure.
In present-day Scotland, a shape-shifting shaman and a Druid embrace the forbidden to safeguard history from renegade gods bent on sabotaging history by kidnapping the Goddess of Time.
A woman Cochise despises is his only hope for a future. He has no choice except to swallow his pride and protect Druidess Mairi from a man who is blackmailing her into breaking time-travel Code by kidnapping her sister. But his presence tempts Mairi into risking her sister’s life in falling in love. A fairy hairball and a pack of Hell Hounds force the duo to hide on an astral plane where there is no resolution beyond facing their FORBIDDEN ETERNITY.

CONTEST ALERT!
And to make certain everyone has fun beyond checking out Jay's pictures today, I'm giving away a small medicine pouch to one lucky winner. I believe this one has a dream catcher on it. But something decorative nonetheless. I say "I believe" because the box it's inside is buried in my garage with the rest of my office. And I don't have time to dig out said box at the moment but will this weekend. Just leave me a comment about what draws you to Native-American tales by midnight, CST today. I'll randomly draw a winner and post the name here tomorrow.
I'd also like to note I blog about reference books at http://blog.skhyemoncrief.com/. I've been known to hold contests there. So, you get two perks for the price of one. ;)

Last but Certainly not Least!
Well Folks, we’ve come to the end of the Blog Fest and once again, I’d like to THANK Ginger for allowing us to come out and play.
I’ve certainly enjoyed introducing myself and sharing with you my life, my Tempered series and my TWRP titles.
But before I say good bye, I’d like to share with you my Upcoming Release from Enspiren Press – The Visionary.
The Story Behind The Visionary:
Although I may have come a long way from penning stories in 5-subject notebooks, my writing techniques are the same; I simply write what God puts on my heart.
The Visionary started out as a "light" romance. The twins, Taylor and Trevor introduced themselves to me and I found them intriguing. They were talented, good looking, successful, and I just knew I would have a ball writing their story!
Until the day they revealed their deep, dark secrets and the horrors they'd experienced as children. I’ll never forget that day as long as I live.
A friend had commented that the twins were awfully close for a m/f set which made me wonder why they were so close. I walked out of my office into the living room where my husband watched a talk show. On the stage a man was crying and apologizing to his sisters because he could not stop the abuse they’d suffered. That’s when it struck me why my twins were so close. Believe me when I tell you that my heart literally stumbled in my chest and every drop of blood drained from my being. In that moment I knew the FULL meaning of the old adage: be careful what you pray for.
You see, in 1989 I recommitted my life to Christ and committed my writing to Him, asking that I never write "just another romance, but something that would glorify Him." This was one moment I had second thoughts about that whole commitment. This was one time I actually doubted I could write what He wanted me to write, and believe me, I did everything I could think of to get out of it...I whined, I pleaded, I told Him that I just couldn't do it, I'm not strong enough or talented enough. After all, we're told to write what we know and I knew nothing about child abuse!
Except that it is disgustingly prevalent in today's society.
As a Christian I'm urged to listen to the still, small Voice inside--the Voice of God's Spirit, and He will guide and direct me. So, when that still, small Voice whispered, "who do you write for anyway?" I repented, surrendered and submitted.
I wrote the story.
Set in my native area of Lake Charles, Louisiana, The Visionary revolves around twins Taylor and Trevor Forrestier (pronounced ‘foresjay’).
Blurb: A visionary is someone who sees into the future, Taylor Forrestier sees into the past but only as it pertains to her work. Hailed by Architectural Digest and Architectural Review as “a visionary with an instinct for beauty and an eye for the unique” Taylor is undoubtedly a brilliant architect and gifted designer. But she and twin brother Trevor, share more than a successful business. The two share a childhood wrought with lies and deceit and the kind of abuse that’s disgustingly prevalent in today’s society. Can the love of God and the awesome healing power of His grace and mercy free the twins from their past and open their hearts to the good plan and the future He has for their lives?
The Visionary is already getting great reviews. Amanda Killgore, a reviewer for Huntress Reviews said, “Once again, I am struck by Ms. Thibodeaux's ability to create realistic characters and situations that both portray things the way they truly are for Christians and honor God, while never becoming graphic. While many romance writers feel it necessary for people in love to automatically say "yes," she shows that it is possible to do the right thing and in a way that can be seen as the hero and heroine being strong, not white Wonder bread milquetoasts. This story in particular tackles tough, dark gritty subjects, not the least of which being how difficult forgiveness can be. It is a true crime she is not on the NY Times bestseller list; the world desperately needs to read things like this timely, relevant tale.”
So there you have it folks, now you know all about me and my work. For more information, visit my website and/or blog or read my articles @ Associated Content.
Readers Pay Attention! I will continue to monitor comments on my posts for 1 week at the end of which (Sunday, March 16th) I will contact the lucky winners!
Until later….take care, be BLESSED! and remember….when the going gets tough, the tough get on their knees!

Raised by self-centered, high-power executives, he’s longed for the idyllic life of residing in a cozy house in a small town with the love of his life. Will he gain the heart of the lovely widow or will he lose her to the wine country of New York?
As well as novels, TWRP offers short ebooks for your reading pleasure!
