Sunday Snips & Stuff by Ginger #Sundaysnips

Happy Mother's day!!!!

This week I'm just cruising.  I'm working on my next novel, Desperation's Bride when the mood strikes, but wanted to share the beautiful cover done by Charlene Raddon.  I'm a visual person, so having a perfect cover inspires me.  I guess you can guess this is a western historical about a mail order bride.  *lol*

Here's a sneak peek of the cover and the contents:
Char Raddon

Here'e the scene I wrote yesterday to coincide with the cover....see if you like it: (Remember this is the first unedited draft.)

Breakfast over, the children fed, outside playing, and the dishes washed by Clare, she followed Jason into his room.  “The dresses are in this trunk.  Don’t know why I saved  a couple when I decided to put Mary’s wedding gown aside so Susanna might wear it one day…maybe because I like the color blue.”  He opened the dusty lid.
Clare spread up Justin’s bed while he fished through the contents.  “I think Susanna will be happy to have a memory of her mother, even if she doesn’t wear her dress. You're very thoughtful.”
Strange, Clare thought.  She wasn’t bothered by the idea  of wearing a dead woman’s clothes, let alone the deceased spouse of her intended.

Justin shook the creases from  a beautiful long-sleeved, blue dress with lace at the collar and ruffles across the shoulders and down the front to the waist.   “This was always a favorite of mine.  You look to be the same size as Mary so I doubt there will be much to alter.”  He laid the garment on the bed and unfolded a floral with blue cornflowers as the prominent pattern.  “Here’s the only other one I kept.  Mary liked to wear this warm weather because it’s made of light cotton and has shorter sleeves.  She always wore…what are those things that make the skirt’s fuller?”
“Crinolines?”

A WHILE LATER, I WROTE THIS TO ACCOMPANY IT:

While the children washed up at the kitchen pump, Clare slipped back into Benjamin’s bedroom, spread up the bed, and filled the bowl on the night table from the matching pitcher.  She dipped a soft cloth into the water and washed her face, neck and other places not covered by clothing.  After disrobing, she washed her armpits, ran a bush through her hair, fished in the armoire for her toilet water, and applied some sparingly.  She wriggled into Mary’s blue gown, and smiled at the immediate fit.  Clare spanned the waist of the luscious material with her hands and spun around, feeling like she danced on a cloud.

Visions of walking down the aisle to meet her groom flashed in her head and she walked to the window to make sure she hadn't imagined her new home.  Fingering the real glass in the window, she appreciated how smooth and wonderful the panes felt given the fact that Linus’ windows only had shutters to ward off the cold air and protect from the weather.  A thought donned.  Her groom waited,  so she cut her musing short,  perched onto the side of Benjamin's neatly made bed, pulled on her worn-out shoes, and quickly laced them.  Was this really happening?  Was she going to marry the man that dreams were made of?  Her cheeks hurt from smiling, and when she stood, she gazed down at the dress, deciding the small earrings she’d brought with her…one’s that Ma had given her, would be the perfect touch.  She found them in a small box at the armoire's bottom and clipped them on.  Pleased with her appearance, she swept out the door and went to meet her new family outside.

Check for this release of this one, hopefully by the end of the year.  In the meantime...hop on over to the following blogs and check them out:

Cover Reveal - Sarah's Hope

I'm pleased to share my new cover with you.  Sarah's Hope...a continuation of Sarah's life will be released soon by Books We Love.  I'm closing in on writing "the end."  I'm hoping everyone who read  Sarah's Heart and Passion will want to explore life a little further with Sarah.
If you want to purchase your own copy and be prepared...all my books are available via my Amazon page.  Oh...this beautiful cover was done by Michelle Lee.

 BLURB:

Sarah Collins first began her journey on a wagon train bound for old west and met a man who’d become the love of her life. After waking from a dream she believed truly valid, she met her half Lakota-half-white man again…this time for real and in Manhattan…and married him.  Now Nathanial Elder (AKA Wolf) is dead at the hands of a drunk driver, and Sarah Elder is trying to get past her grief and get on with life.  Somewhere, somehow, she angered someone and she hasn’t an inkling who or how.

Frightening phone calls, death threats, and police investigating for clues turn Sarah’s life into sheer turmoil. Another dream about Wolf adds even more confusion, and best friend, Marie, who is staying with Sarah until the culprit is caught doesn’t take things too seriously until the caller obviously knows all about her, too.

A murdered policeman, a stranger who seems to know everything about Sarah’s past, present and future, makes the danger astonishingly real. Will the police discover the person who eventually kidnaps Sarah, and will they save her before the killer sends her soul to the great beyond?  Has Wolf intervened from the grave to lend help in keeping his wife alive?

Sunday Snippets with Ginger Simpson #sundaysnips

This week I'm sharing a little more of my WIP, Sarah's Hope, which I hope to finish this month.  I hope you enjoy it, but remember this is the first, unedited draft:

While she waited for Daniel, she wandered down the hallway..“Mr. Crane?”  Sarah stood in the doorway of her supervisor’s office.  Uneasiness trembled in her voice.
“Yes.”  He turned, brows raised.
“I-I’d like to reconsider my earlier decision if you don’t mind.”
“About taking time off?”  His mouth pulled into a frown.
“Yes.  I’d like to get away for a while, and I’m considering a trip to another country.”
“Another country?”  His voice climbed an octave.  “How long would you be gone?”  He dropped a file onto his desk and crossed his arms across his bulging stomach.
Sarah squared her shoulders. “Since you mentioned hiring someone to fill in for me, I’d like to request a month away.”
The sun shining through the window behind him cast what looked like a halo around his head.  Sarah almost laughed since he was anything but angelic.  “What do you think,” she asked, feigning bravery she didn’t feel.  The man had an intimidating presence—always did.
He cleared his throat and adjusted his tie. “I suppose if you need time off, you need time off.  I’ll put in a call and arrange a temporary person.  When do you plan to leave?”
“At once...i-if that’s okay.  I received another threat here at work today, and I’d really like to just disappear for a while.  I don’t plan to let anyone know my destination, so if you don’t mind, I’m not even going to tell you.”
He stiffened.  “Surely you don’t suspect me?
Sarah shook her head.  “Oh, it's not that, sir.  Not at all, but I figure the fewer people who know my whereabouts, the better.”
Mr. Crane cleared his throat again.  “Well, then enjoy your time away, and I hope the police find whoever is behind all your woes.  I’m sure I’ll get someone in to read while you’re gone.  If not right away, I’ll still have Marie.”  He stared into space and massaged his chin. “Hmmm, maybe I’ll have an assistant editor step into your place.  That would save me some money”
“Right.”  Poor Marie.  She certainly wouldn't be happy to learn she was the sole senior editor, but given the circumstances, she’d understand.  Plus, she knew how cheap the boss was when it came to running the business.
Sarah wanted to scream at him, but forced kindness to surface.  “Thank you, Mr. Crane. I’ll apprise you of any progress made, and I’ll see you in a month.”

Sarah slunk out of the office before her boss had a chance to reconsider his moment of niceness.  She glanced at her wristwatch—quitting time. Marie must surely be wondering where Sarah was.

Watch for the completed novel coming from Books We Love and appearing on my Amazon page.

Sunday Snippets from Ginger Simpson #sundaysnips

I've about run the gamut of published stories to tempt you with, so today, I'm sharing the beginning of a new WIP, Desperation's Bride.  I've always been fascinated about women with the strength and determination to become mail-order brides, so I decided to write my own.  I hope you'll encourage me to complete it:

So...the story starts:

Arizona 1862

Clare Sutton winced as she rolled onto her sore shoulder.  Her pillowcase, damp with tears, cooled her heated cheek from the overly warm room in the run-down shack she and her mother shared with her stepfather, Linus Crawford. His fondness for moonshine meant he turned meaner the more he drank.  Tonight had been just more reason for Clare to leave.  Linus' drinking and subsequent beatings had become far too frequent.

After losing Pa and Clare’s baby brother to Typhoid, Ma married the first man to come along  who was willing to take on another man’s child.  When sober, Linus was quiet and kind, but as a drunk, his resentment against Clare was loud and clear. Without her, Ma’s life might be more tolerable. He never vented his anger toward her.

Nerves drove Clare to toss and turn, but the aching of her welted upper body kept her frozen in place.  Was becoming a mail order bride a good idea?  Might the man she married be the same as Linus?  She reckoned taking a draw from the deck of life was better than the card she was dealt when her Ma remarried

Doing an errand in town for Ma two weeks ago had provided an opportunity to mail a letter to Mr. Jason Pollett, a name and post office box Clare had obtained through the local minister. Although hearing sermons didn’t happen as frequently as when Pa hitched up the buggy every Sunday, Clare had spied an ad on the mercantile wall and hot-footed it over to the church.

“Of course, I understand why you can’t come every week,” Pastor Joe had said.  “Life changes in ways we never expect and I’ll be more than happy to help one of my favorite parishioners keep a secret.  I’ve read Jason Pollett’s letter and he seems like a fine fellow, and California isn't that far away.”

She'd clucked her tongue against the back of her teeth.  Linus Crawford had seemed like a good catch, too, but look at how that had turned out.  She'd swallowed her doubts and accepted quill and paper from the good reverend and written a letter of introduction to Mr. Pollett.

Now she waited.  She'd said nothing to anyone, and only the pastor knew.  Her nerves tensed at the thought of meeting a stranger for the purpose of becoming his wife. Was she crazy?

The urge to fidget grew, but soreness kept her still.  Moonlight filtered through the window enabling her to stare at the low ceiling beams while hoping the reverend was a good judge of character.  He'd urged her to hurry and write because men in search of brides didn't wait long.  Hopefully Jason Pollett was a patient man.

Sunday Snippets with Ginger Simpson #sundaysnips

Today, I'm sharing another sample from my current WIP, Sarah's Soul, releasing next year from Books We Love.  I don't have a cover yet, but I'm plugging along on te story and I hope you enjoy it.

Sarah's  Soul - Excerpt

The phone was ringing when Sarah unlocked the door.  The police had removed the tracking device right after George died so Sarah had had the telephone mounted to the wall.  She left the door open and rushed to pick up the receiver, hoping for good news.  “Hello.”

“You feeling safe, Sarah?”  An eeerie voice turned her blood cold.  The mechanical sound indicated the person obviously spoke through some sort of machine.

“Who is this?”

Her frantic motions toward the phone grabbed Marie’s attention.

“Someone who plans to finish the job poor ol’ George started.”

“Why?  Do you know me?”  Sarah’s fright drove her determination to discover who wanted her dead.  She put her hand over the mouthpiece.

“Marie,” she whispered. “Phone Daniel on your cell and tell him the calls are starting again.”

“Oh, I know you very well.” Her attention was drawn back to her nightmare.  “Enough to know Marie is still there and most likely calling the police, but they aren’t going to find me by trying to discover where this call originated.  I’m not that stupid.  I won’t call again because you already know George is gone, but I wanted you to know I’m going to make sure to take Sarah’s Soul.  See you soon.”

Sarah hung up and sagged into a dining room chair. “Not again.  Please Lord, not again.”  She lowered her head into her palms to mask her tears.

“There is no bottom,” Sarah straightened and sniffed.  “The man on the phone said he won’t call again because I already know I’m going to die.  There’s nothing Daniel can do. The killer only wanted to torture me with one last call.  Unlike George, he’s through with these ridiculous warnings.

Marie shook her head.  “Daniel didn’t become a detective for nothing.  He’s got skills and he’ll find this guy.  Stop doubting him and trust he has your back.”

“Easy for you to say.  You aren’t the one who’s looking death in the face.” Sarah stood and walked into the bedroom and closed the door behind her.

Sunday Snippets with Ginger #sundaysnips

Today, I'm sharing snippets from my current WIP, Sarah's Soul, coming from Books We Love early 2016.  Make sure to check out and bookmark the page now...especially my page.  *lol* While you're there, don't forget to enter our ongoing contest.

Hope you enjoy this foray into a mystery/suspense that haunts Sarah from the beginning of this new novel.  Remember this has yet to be edited, and is the first draft.  While you wait for me to finish this story, you may want to invest your time in reading Sarah's Heart & Passion, the map that will guide you to Manhattan and prepare you for what's happening next.  Hold on...it's a bumpy ride:

Sarah followed Marie down the bus stairs to the sidewalk.  Exhaust from the heavy traffic on the Manhattan street hung heavy in the air. Every nerve in Sarah’s body tingled, anticipating the worst. The constant turning of her head caused a cramp in her neck, but as her caller advised, she kept looking over her shoulder. Once inside her apartment building, she took a cleansing breath and shrugged several times to ease the tension in her shoulders.

Marie peered up the stairs. “Coast is clear.”

On the third landing, Marie peeked down the long hallway. “Coast is still clear.”

Sarah rolled her eyes. “Honestly, Marie, you’re starting to sound like a TV program.”

Marie pulled her lips into a thin white ine. “Are you saying you want me to stop looking out for a problem? Just say the word. This isn’t all that fun, you know?”

“I’m sorry. I’m not being very nice. I really do appreciate everything you’re doing. Please, forgive my whiney tone. I’ve just reached my limit, that’s all.” She rubbed her forehead.

“Well, just a few more feet and we’ll be home.” Marie offered encouragement.

Sarah unlocked the door to a ringing phone. Her head lolled back and she heaved a heavy sigh. “Oh please. Not again.”

“I’ll get it,” Marie offered and grabbed the receiver.

Sarah laced the safety chain across the door and dead bolted it, wondering why her friend was so brave.

“Hello,” Marie answered.

“Is this Mrs. Elder?” A female voice asked.

“No, she isn’t available at the moment. May I tell her who called?”

“Adele from her bank. We received a notice to close her account and I wanted to make sure she authorized the note we received in the mail before we act. The signature doesn’t match what we have on file. Would you please have her return my call as soon as possible?”

Marie’s mouth gaped. “Wait…she’s right here.

“What is it?” Sarah asked, feeling her eyes widen.

Marie placed her hand over the receiver and thrust the phone at Sarah. “It’s the bank….”

A touch on her shoulder drew her from deep reverie and caused her to gasp.  She turned, and still unable to exhale, came face-to-face with the most attractive brave she’d ever seen.  Sunlight glistened on his freshly greased braids, and muscled arms extended from a broad, smooth chest exposed beneath his fringed vest.  Finding her voice proved impossible.

“Hau, I too come for water.”  He extended a pouch identical to those she carried.

Releasing her pent up breath, she let go of the tension his touch raised.  “I was deep in thought, and you...you startled me.”  Her gaze remained locked with his–eyes capable of casting fear in an enemy, yet softened by his smile.

“I am sorry I frightened you, but our meeting is not by chance.  I followed you here, hoping to learn your name. I know I should not have approached you in this way, but I have watched you from afar and...and did not wish to wait to to meet you.

“Taku eniciyapa he?”  The timbre of his voice when he asked her name left her breathless.

“Mitakuyepi…my name is Yellow Moon.  I am so called for the season when the leaves fall.”

Ginger's Six Sentence Sunday

Welcome to Dishin' It Out and another Six Sentence Sunday.  As I told you last week, if you visited, I needed to switch gears because I'm trying to finish Sarah's Passion, the sequel to Sarah's Heart, so I'm putting Chugiak Moon on the back burner for a few weeks, and inviting you to share six sentences from my latest WIP.  I never expected to have one, let alone two Jimmy Thomas Covers, and I love both of them.

A little back story from the blurb for Sarah's Heart:  Previously published as Sarah's Journey

Will the man of mixed blood save her life, or will she save his?

When Sarah Collins sets her sights on California for a new beginning, she never dreams a war party will attack the wagon train she travels on. She and her new-found friend Molly are the sole survivors, but when Molly succumbs to her injuries, Sarah is left alone to find her way back to civilization. While trying to mount a stolen horse, she suffers a rattlesnake bite that threatens to accomplish what the Indians failed. Is it her time to die or does Sarah have a purpose she's yet to discover?

Now, Sarah awakens in modern day Manhattan, a dream so real in her mind that tears still dampen her cheeks.  The goodbye kiss she shared with Grey Wolf (Nathaniel Elder) still burns on her lips.  How could a dream cause her heart to hurt so much?  Imagine her amazement when she answers a knock on her door and finds the man from her dream is a new neighbor coming to borrow a cup of sugar.  She remembers everything about him, even his name, but there isn't even a flicker of recognition in his beautiful hazel eyes.

Here's my six for the week:

“Nathaniel Elder.”  Sarah Collins leaned her elbows atop the manuscript spread across her desk and rested her chin between her raised palms.  Her editing chore forgotten, she stared into space, picturing “Wolf’s” handsome face and puzzling over the amazement that led him to her doorstep directly from a dream so real she awoke with tears still wet on her cheeks.

“Something wrong, Miss Collins?”  A brusque voice sliced through her thoughts.

Sarah jerked upright and stared into the face of her supervisor, Mr. Crane, who stood in her doorway, his unibrow crooked upward with piqued curiosity.

I hope you enjoyed my offering, and I also hope you'll return to Six Sentence Sunday and follow the links to more snippets. Ya'll come back, ya hear?

Yay or Nay? Sarah's Passion, my WIP!

I'm excited about Sarah's Passion...a book I really hadn't planned on writing quite so soon, but to appease a few review commenters, I've working hard to continue the saga between Wolf and Sarah, a couple who got acquainted and bid farewell in the old west, but have now, at least from Sarah's POV, reacquainted in modern day Manhattan.  I can't wait to see if Sarah can recapture the love she cherished in the 1800s or if she's going to lose Wolf again, but this time because of entirely different circumstances.

Today, I'd like to share an excerpt from this WIP and get your take.  Remember, this is the first draft and you're the first to see it:

EXCERPT:

After wiping down the counter and table, [Sarah] she put away the candelabras, then sat on the sofa to pull on her socks. With one knee bent and an anklet half on, Sarah clearly envisioned the smiling and matronly face of Maggie Smith. In the night vision, the woman had been the only person in Independence to befriend Wolf and overlook his red blood. She’d also taken Sarah in, helped her find a teaching job, and stood by her when the rest of the town had a ‘hissy’ fit over a young Indian boy enrolled in class. Every memory rolled through Sarah’s mind as though it all had happened yesterday…a motion picture that replayed each detail vividly. Somehow she’d have to find a way to bring up Maggie’s name and see if it brought a reaction from Wolf. Looking in the phone book wouldn’t help. Smith was the most common last name ever, and who knew where she lived…or if she lived, ever.

Sarah put on her other sock, donned her tennis shoes, and then, in the kitchen, pulled the bulging garbage bag from the can. The smell of last night’s chicken mingled with the smell from the candles until she tied the plastic into a knot. Opening the door, she headed for the dumpster, only to run into another neighbor, Peg Scott, armed with own refuse and headed in the same direction.

Her streaked hair perfectly coiffed and her flawless make-up already on made Sarah feel inferior. Of course, Peg never went anywhere without looking like a runway model. In contrast to Sarah’s dowdy gray sweats, Peg’s running suit matched the bright blue strip in her jogging shoes. She flicked her long hair back over one shoulder with her free hand. “Have you had a chance to get a gander of our new neighbor? Hubba Hubba. What a hunk.”

A leaden knot formed in Sarah’s stomach.

“No,” she responded casually with a shrug, the lie rolling off her tongue with ease. “What’s so great about him?”

“Oh, girl. He’s yummm-me. Dark hair and complexion, broad shoulders, narrow hips, and arms that I’d do anything to have wrapped around me.” Peg’s eyes took on a dreamy haze.

Jealousy gnawed at Sarah. That proverbial green-eyed devil she’d always heard about turned red and perched on her shoulder, whispering in her ear that Wolf belonged to her. Fighting the urge to swing her trash bag around and bash Peg in her pretty made up face, she tamped down her feelings. Clearly Peg had no idea her target had already been a guest in Sarah’s apartment. She forced a smile. “Hmmm, have you met him yet?”

Peg gave another flip of her hair. “No, but I fully intend to find a way to introduce myself. He’s sexy with a capital "s"."

At the dumpster, Sarah loosened her fisted hands to stop her nails from biting into her palms and hefted her trash over the edge, her mind working a mile a minute. She had to get back to her apartment and find a way to distract Wolf for the day. If Peg got her clutches into him, Sarah might never get the chance to renew what they once felt…what she believed they felt. “I gotta rush, Peg. Nice seeing you, but I have some important errands to tend to. Catch you later.” Spinning on her heel, Sarah rushed back inside the building and down the hallway to her first floor apartment. She ignored the little voice in her mind that questioned her sanity.

* * *

Standing in the bathroom, Sarah stared into the mirror while she applied her make-up and styled her hair. Was the dream just that--a silly dream? If only she knew how to approach someone and ask the zillion questions whirling around in her brain. Why in the world would she conjure up a time when she was a pioneer woman on her way to California? Did she even have the courage to try and save another human being as she had Molly? Was all this a previous life? Experts claimed dreams meant something, but damned if this wasn’t the most confusing she’d ever had.

An image of Peg’s smiling face blurred Sarah’s own reflection, reminding her she had to hurry. A plan formed in her head as she shouldered her purse and closed her locked door behind her.

She stood at Molly and Wolf’s door, her palms sweating, and her breath halted. So far, no sign of Peg, but maybe she’d already been there. Sarah could only hope not. The woman was as annoying as a wart.

With a deep inhalation, she raised her hand and knocked, taking a final moment to straighten the tail of her silk blouse and run a pinch down the crease in her black dress slacks.

***

I can't wait to get back to it.   The great think about being a pantser is you never know where the story is headed until you get there.  I can't wait to see how Sarah handles Peg.  How about you?
